I woke up on the concrete around 8:30. After the day off I was ready to hit the road. I packed up, washed up, and hit the road right away.
I walked west on the 380 towards Decatur TX. I put my headphones on and walked a good pace. There was a cool breeze and it wasn't too hot. So I was in pretty good walking conditions.
I walked out in the country stretch and it was really nice. There was a lot of road construction going on as I walked past. A couple guys in a construction truck threw me a cold water as I was walking.
I was in about 10 miles for the day when a man pulled off in a big truck. He handed me a McDonald's bag with 6 mcchickens in it! And also gave me a large poweraid drink! He was a stranger and said he passed me a while ago. He ended up driving 15 miles to McDonald's, then 15 miles back, then 15 miles back again to go home after bringing that to me! He drove 30 miles extra and another half hour to help me! That is so awesome. And he said when he passed he felt like he was called to help me. That really blew me back!
About 10 minutes later I was walking on a closed road that was new, just not open yet. And a twitter follower pulled up and yelled "hey nick". I went over and it was a family in a Beemer. They had brought me a cold gatoraid, a $50 visa giftcard, and a scratcher his little daughter wanted to give me! It was so cool! We talked for about 10 minutes and then they said goodbye. I went to give the little daughter a high 5 and she shook her head then ran up and hugged me! It was so cute and really made me miss family!
I continued on. I got about 20 miles when my knees started to hurt. So I started looking for a place to stop. I came to a shop building that looked like a night club. It didn't look like anyone had been there in a while. So I stopped there and there was also a storage building there. It was about 8pm. When I got there all my water was hot, so I went to a water spicket and drank tons of cold water right away! So refreshing.
I also found a charger there and plugged in. After the sun went down I made a bed in the grass. I was tired and fell asleep around 10pm that night. I hoped nobody would come in during the night, or before I woke up on the morning.
Day 90, July 2, 2012
I woke up on day 90 in a park next to the college in Denton TX. My left knee was hurting pretty bad from sleeping with my leg locked straight. I woke up around 8.I wanted to get a good day and make my way 22 miles or so to get to Decatur TX. Leaving Denton would start a long walk with not a lot in between from Dallas to wichita falls TX. So I wanted to get a couple things before leaving town.
So I packed up and walked down a mile or so. At the edge of town there was a walmart. I stopped there to get a small towel and some sole inserts for my shoes. They were wearing down pretty good and my feet could feel it.
After I left I went to the gas station to put slime in my tires also before leaving town. I used the slime I had bought a few days back and put it into the 3 tires. Then when I put the money in to air it up, the compressor didn't turn on. So I went inside to let the guy know. He looked at me a little strange, and then said he would be out in a few minutes.
So he came out after about almost 10 minutes. He walked up and said "you have to put money in" and I told him I put a dollar in. Then he said "if you put a dollar in it would have worked". Then I said, I know I put a dollar in. He said "we have never had a problem with this, if there was a dollar put in it it would have turned on". Just then I reached in my bag as he was opening it, I grabbed a $5 bill out of my stash and said "here man, you think I'm trying to score free air off of you by not putting a dollar in. Take this. I'm not hustling you for a buck". And he just looked at me and then rolled his eyes and looked away. Then when he opened it there was the last quarter of the dollar I put in jammed. So he banged it and then it dropped. Then the compressor turned on. At this point I think I pissed him off so he just closed the door and locked it and then walked away. It upset me a little but I just continued to do what I had to and aired up.
After that I was a little irritated mostly about losing some time. I had already planned to stop at sonic next to Walmart to get a breakfast burrito before hitting the road. So I went in to the small lobby they had, and plugged in and ordered.
The girl brought it out and was very nice. As I sat there eating she opened the door again and said that someone ordered a bunch of food but took off and that we're gonna throw it out, so she asked if I could take at least one? And I said "heck ya! If your gonna throw it out I will for sure!". So she brought me a full meal out! Then she asked where I was going? So I shared my story with her. She was so touched, and then very excitedly showed me a tattoo she had! And it said, "walk by faith". That was really awesome.
So I was about to get up and leave to walk for the day when a man walked in and said "nick?". I looked back and it was a guy with a shoe box and snacks! He said he drove a half hour from Decatur and tracked me down to bring me the stuff. And my twitter has a locator with each tweet. So he stayed for a bit and talked. What a nice guy and said he was so happy to help.
Then about 10 minutes later the girl from the day before wanted to come meet me again and bring some of her clients she personal trains. So she came and brought me a burrito from chipotle. She brought with her 5 teenagers to ask me a bunch of questions. It was cool and they had some funny questions.
Then it was getting to the point where the distance to my destination for the day was a bit further then I had time for. And I had more visitors coming. So I decided to just go ahead and take one last day to relax there before making my way to the country. It was nice to have visitors and it really encourages me. So it was sort of a good excuse for me to relax a day too.
A bit later a man pulled up. At this point the sonic crew were catching on and in between visitors they would come out to ask questions. A man came in and he was also a twitter follower who surprised me. He said he really thought my story was inspiring and he was a man of faith, so it was a blessing to meet him and hear some of his perspective. I always enjoy what people feel and think about this journey. It's hard for me to understand it from being the person walking it. To me I just am a homeless man who walks all day. So it is for sure interesting and helps give me motivation.
When he left the district manager was there at sonic. She came out to me and asked if she could get a picture. She had a girl in the crew come out and we took a picture in front of the sonic sign. Then she said she was sending it to the corporate office. She had already spoke to her boss and they were gonna put the picture and my story in their news letter, and let all the sonics know to help me out along the way! That was wild!
Then the same guy that I had met the day before (with the manure story) had come and tracked me down again. He brought his daughter and her baby to visit and meet me also. It was so cool and they were very awesome people. They brought me a care package of some soaps and shampoo, a medical wrap, $10, and a $45 sonic giftcard! I couldn't believe it! That was awesome. We hung out and talked about an hour or so.
After they left the sonic crew all came out as they were slow and wanted to hear more of the story and had questions. So I told them and answered their questions. They were amazed. I always know deep down that I am only here from a prayer and god has provided the rest of my way. So I always make sure to give ALL the credit to him. He is the only way I have made it starting with nothing. And even 95% of people who help me say they felt called to help from god (strangers, not twitter followers). The hardest part of this was the starting with nothing. And I only had help from strangers until I got hundreds of miles in and already had momentum and help. That's when twitter support started and grew.
So as we were all hanging out a guy and girl walked in. They came in and said "nick?" and it was so funny seeing the sonic crew (5 or so people) scurry away not wanting to ease in. So the couple who came in were young and had just got married a few days earlier. They sat down and we talked for about an hour also! Very nice people. We talked about how this trip has been through the works of god, and how it has restored faith for me and others. For that I am very thankful. Before they left he handed me $100 and said it was half from them and half from one of the guys who came in earlier. I said they really didn't need to, but they said take it! And they also gave me a container of cupcakes that I was assuming were from the wedding.
So after they left there was a man in there who looked like he needed some help. So I gave him $3. He was so thankful. After that the manager came out and sat down to talk to me. She was so shocked from all the visitors I had. I told her I don't ask for anything, but just pray and ask for prayers, and at the end of the day I always end up with enough to share. She was teary eyed and said she can relate. She said she has been in a struggle too and living in a motel. And she can never see how things will help keep her afloat even to the next week. But they always seem to come. She said she has been on the verge of her life falling apart for a while, and doesn't know how she makes it. I had the $100 in 20's on the bench next to where I was sitting. So I grabbed a $20 and gave it to her. She said "no!" and wouldn't take it. Then I said, please let me share this. I have been given this and when I share, It comes back to me. So in a way I was using her to receive more blessings later. And said I would throw it away if she didn't take it. She broke down and really started crying and put her hands on her face. She said I was an angel. But I told her nope, sorry, just a smelly hobo. But it was for sure an awesome moment for me and in all actuality worth the $20!
So as I packed up to leave, the crew brought me a bunch of stuff to take. Some food and drinks etc. I was so thankful and I headed out. It was about 10pm now so I went across the street to a shop. I walked behind it and out back was just grass and fields and the railroad. So it was hidden and I felt safe and out of sight. I made my bed on the concrete right behind the building. I fell asleep around 11:30. It was a cool night and I slept ok. The train woke me up periodically and the concrete was hard. But in my mind, I was resting easy.
Day 89, July 1, 2012
I woke up around 8am. I heard drums behind me off in the distance beating. So I woke up and noticed a few hundred yards behind me was a band setting up on a stage.
I got up and felt pretty good after a night where I slept decent. I washed up and did my morning stuff then packed up. I got on a move quickly towards Denton. I got onto the bridge right away and walked across. As I watched the boats I really missed being out on the lake all summer. Usually that's what summer at home consists of.
So I made my way across and to Lake Dallas, the next town. I kept walking and really wanted to get to the laundromat before taking my break so I could get a shower in. (well bathe in the bathroom). So I stayed moving very rapidly walking and not taking any breaks.
I ended up next to a jack in the box about half way to the laundromat where someone coming out of the parking lot handed me 3 tacos. So I ended up going inside and eating while also getting a short charge.
About 5 minutes later I got right back on the road. I walked about 17 miles with just that quick stop. My knees started hurting pretty good those last few miles. But I finally came to the laundromat. I went inside the bathroom taking my backpack in, and stripped down to bathe. It felt amazing! Even if it wasnt a great shower, it was better than being dirty like I was!
I had a mother and daughter from twitter who wanted to come visit. So they met me outside the laundry mat where they brought me a water jug for ice, and some candy. I was very thankful and we talked for a while there. They thought it was very interesting what I'm doing.
After they left I went into a subway. I ordered a sandwhich which for me was splurging. I usually am getting 1-2 items off a dollar menu if I get anything. So this was a treat.
I had another group of people who came to see me. They had just been out riding and came to share some time with me. I talked to two of the people (husband and wife) who told me about how they had traveled before too. They were really cool people and they related to me in a lot of ways in dealing with trials in life. To me their stories were so interesting. They had hitchhiked when they were younger. They sort of just winged it day to day and totally had a similar feeling of survival like I know now. And it was pretty funny as they told me one night they were cold and had nothing to stay warm. So they ended up climbing a fence and sleeping in manure to stay warm! Ahahahahaha! It was awesome. But as I know there is no shame in survival and whatever it takes is what will be done. It was cool to hear their stories and I felt a strong connection to them. Very thankful to have come across their paths. And I will always remember them.
I had another 2 visitors after that who had brought me tacos for dinner. We sat in subway and ate dinner together. They were really cool and I got to share some stories with them and get to know them too. They brought me some supplies and we took some funny pictures too. It was cool to have company!
Since I have started I have not seen anyone I knew at that point still. So it is very nice to have such good people to come and spend time with me. It really helps a lot to have the encouragement to keep moving. Even just them coming to see me is such a blessing and helps me to keep my head up. Not the stuff anyone gives to me (that helps in a practical way) but the gestures and connection I can share with others while I'm on this lonely road really makes me feel better.
After the visitors left the guys working in subway came over to ask what was with the visitors and that they were curious. So I shared the story with them and they were very supportive and curious. They gave me free water before I left.
So from there I left around 11 and headed to a park up the street. I rolled up a small hill in the park and stopped behind a tree. I laid down on a slope and passed out there around midnight. I kept sliding down all night so I would wake up often. But besides that is was a good hidden spot.

Day 88, June 30, 2012
I woke up on day 88 on the concrete next to a snack bar of a baseball field. I had not slept much from the sprinklers hitting me all night. It was a very frustrating night. When I woke up it was one of those days where I really did not feel like anything but resting. But a thought that always goes against that is getting home to see my family.
I got up and packed my things up. I used a water fountain to fill my waters and also washed up a little. I wet my hair and it felt nice and cool. I was ready to go and I hit the road.
I walked out of farmers branch and got up along the 635 to started heading north towards Denton. I was really needing a good clean up and laundry, so I was gonna make my way to one along my route the next day in Denton.
I walked about 6 miles and came across a Starbucks. I went inside to plug in and get a water. I wasn't planning on staying there but I ended up there most of the day.
I sat inside on a comfy chair and relaxed in the air conditioning. I know after Dallas it is gonna get long, hot and tough. So I figured I can take my time through here while I have places to stop.
I got there at around 11 and ended up staying until about 4:30. I got caught up on journals and some things to document some of the past few days.
At around 4:30 I headed north again. It was really hot and I was trying to drink plenty of water. It was a bit tough though as my waters were hot from the sun heating them all day. I have to leave my new cart outside and keep an eye on it through a window. I will take my backpack in with me since it holds my valuables. Then will sit by a window near my cart. So drinking that water was a little rough. But it's water and I need it so it's not that big of a deal.
I walked a ways and came across a stretch where I saw a man walking towards me. I asked if he was ok. He seemed irritated. He said he missed a ride home so he was walking 8 miles all the way home and didn't have his wallet or phone on him. Since I knew how thirsty you can get walking in this heat, I gave him $5 so that he could get a drink if he wanted.
I came up to a waffle house a little later and was going to take one last little break before finishing. It was around 8pm now. I got a drink there and when I left they wouldn't let me pay.
About a half mile up a car pulled over and handed me left overs from the restaurant they just had dinner at. It was tacos with rice and beans. I was very thankful and it was probably about $5 worth of food, and I had just given the guy earlier $5. So that was pretty cool.
As I kept walking all of a sudden the road turned narrow and had very little shoulder to walk on. I pulled out my reflective vest to put on my cart. It was still sketchy as cars were very close to me. And at some points I had to wheel up on the heelside to get past areas without a shoulder.
I came to a park just south of a lake that was south of Denton. The highway went over the lake on a bridge but I pulled off before and there was a perfect park right there close to the water. I walked out and laid down next to a dugout of a baseball feild there. It was comfortable and I felt the cool breeze coming off the lake. I fell asleep and surprisingly slept well that night.

Day 87, June 29, 2012
I woke up on day 87 at the park next to my push cart and a bench under a tree. It was about 7.I sat up and packed my things up. I got ready and rolled off.
I headed towards Farmers Branch, which was a suburb of Dallas. I started walking and was really liking how smooth and easy the new cart rolled. It was not set up just how I wanted it, but I would rig it up soon before I leave the civilized area.
I walked about 5 miles when I came to a frontage road along the 635 interstate. At this point I'm pretty much in the busy city. But the road I was walking down was in construction just ahead. As I entered the construction zone the actual roadway became very narrow. There were barriers on both sides and really not enough room for me to walk and have cars pass safely. So I ended up going a little ways trying to hurry between traffic. But eventually it became too hectic.
So I ended up walking into the construction zone off road. I thought I may have been kicked out but if I did oh well. It was good that I had the new cart because the other one would not have went through there well. I rolled next to dozers and under bucket trucks. Rolled over rocks and climbed hills. It was pretty rough walking compared to a smooth flat surface.
After about 3 miles through there, and nobody saying anything, I finally got out of the road work stretch. I had to weave through a traffic jam where I was crossing through cars like a maze. It was a trip. When I finally got to a slower area where traffic was less thick, I passed another bucket truck with two electricians working on a sign. They yelled to me to come over. They asked if I wanted some scrap wire to cash the copper in for money. That was cool. Even though I didn't take it, the offer was awesome.
I walked up to a McDonald's in Farmers Branch and stopped there for the day. When I got there, the pastor who sold me the push cart met me there to do an interview on more of the journey. So I sat with him and he asked me some questions. Here is the interview
https://www.dropbox.com/s/e7rfydp88hpo45c/Hobo_Nick.mov
After the interview he left. He tweeted me later that he left the $40 I paid him for the stroller in my stuff when I was getting a drink. That was cool.
I had two more visitors right after that. I had some food and a little money given to me. It was cool. I visited with them a while and it was great having the company. I sat there at McDonald's for the day.
At about 8 I left there and noticed a Big Lot's next door. So I went in and right there in front there were crates. So I bought two of them to rig onto my cart. Then down the parking lot there was an a\Auto Zone. So I went in and got a bottle of slime and fix a flat. Just to be prepared for the long desert stretches. I sat outside and rigged the cart up to get it organized. I was happy with how they turned out.
I walked down about half a mile and came to a sport's complex. I walked back behind a baseball field and laid down right behind the fence. I laid down and was very tired. I went to sleep around 10:30. Then I woke up from water hitting me on my face! I moved back a bit and moved my stuff. Then a bit later some other sprinklers turned on and hit me again! So I moved again. I ended getting hit 2 more times and it was so frustrating. Eventually the last one was at 4am. It was a hard night with little sleep.
